PETALING JAYA: The Government should do more to stem rising prices, said 1Malaysia Foundation Trustee Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye (pic).
He said if the problem of price hikes was not tackled effectively, it would affect the livelihood of Malaysians and might impact the economy.
“Malaysians want to see action taken by the Government as the rising cost of living is one of the paramount issues affecting us today.
“If the matter is not addressed, it is not only going to affect the livelihood of the people, but it could also have an adverse impact on the economy,” he said in a statement.
He said this while welcoming a high-level committee on living costs that would be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in early January.
The committee will listen to what some non-governmental groups have to say about the rise in costs.
This year, Malaysians have had to bear a number of price hikes amid the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax and a decline in the value of the ringgit against the US dollar.
Toll rates, taxi and public transport fares have all gone up this year.
Lee said it was one thing to listen to what people had to say about the rise in costs.
“The Government must also be prepared to consider, accept and implement constructive and practical views from the public,” he said.
