GEORGE TOWN: Two Maulidur Rasul processions will be held in Penang today.
The first, organised by the state government, will proceed from the SP Arena in Seberang Jaya to the Seberang Jaya Mosque on the Penang mainland at 7.30am.
The Penang Muslim League will then hold its annual procession starting from the Kapitan Keling Mosque at 4.30pm. The 5km procession will pass Chulia Street, Penang Road, Burmah Road, Transfer Road, Hutton Lane and Campbell Street before returning to the mosque.
Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas is expected to grace both events.
In Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, some 10,000 people to be led by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin will gather in the Sipitang district, 160km from the state capital, to mark the state-level Maulidur Rasul celebrations.
Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Arifin Mohd Arif said they would walk 3.5km from the Sipitang hospital grounds to Gata Square for the gathering.
He said Syeikh Mohammed Abd Aziz Mahmoud Ghanim, an Egyptian scholar from Al-Azhar University who is well-versed in Bahasa Malaysia, would be giving a special talk at the gathering.
“Various events such as exhibitions, a drawing competition and shows on Islamic art and culture have been lined up,” he said.
In Shah Alam, Selangor State Islamic Affairs, Malay Customs, Heritage, Rural Development and Traditional Villages Committee chairman Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi said a parade would be held at the Malawati Stadium at 8am today.
“The parade will involve thousands of participants from various contingents.
“There will also be stage performances and an award ceremony for those who have contributed significantly to the religion,” he said.
In Kuantan, Pahang Dakwah Islamic and Special Functions Committee chairman Datuk Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad said the Maulidur Rasul celebrations for the state would be postponed to early next year as there were already too many programmes planned for the year end.
