PUTRAJAYA: Nurul Izzah Anwar's photograph with self-styled Sulu princess Jacel Kiram may have cost PKR votes in Sabah, said Khairy Jamaluddin.
The Youth and Sports Minister said there was no need for ‘overkill’ on the issue adding that it should be left to the Sabahans to make their own verdict on the controversial meeting.
“I am not sure what sort of action that can be taken against them (Nurul Izzah and Batu MP Tian Chua), it is better to let the Sabahans decide on their support for PKR,” said Khairy.
He said that there was no need for overkill on the issue as the pictures speak for themselves.
“Even without us (Barisan Nasional) having to do anything at all, I think PKR has basically kissed a lot of Sabah votes goodbye due to this,” said Khairy at a press conference here yesterday.
The Umno Youth Chief said both Nurul Izzah and Tian Chua should apologise to the families of the security officers who were killed in the Lahad Datu intrusion caused by supporters of the Kiram family.
“Both of them had done something that was not sensitive towards Sabahans as well as the victims of the intrusion and the families of the security officers who were killed in the incident,” said Khairy.
He added that the apologies should come without any justifications.
“What they did was something that is insensitive and seen as an insult to those who sacrificed their life defending the nation,” said Khairy.
Nurul Izzah, who is PKR vice-president, had stirred up controversy when photos of her with Jacel at a dinner function in the Philippines went viral on social media.
The Lembah Pantai MP, together with Chua, went to the Philippines to meet political stakeholders in the country.
Both had since apologised and Chua had claimed that both had not realised that it was Jacel who took photos with Nurul Izzah.
However, Khairy said it was unlikely that they were unaware as the pictures also showed Nurul Izzah posing with Jacel while holding up posters that said “Release Anwar Immediately”.
“If you were able to take selfies, and even pose in the photograph while carrying a poster, I think that is more than bumping into someone. It is a bit more than just being unaware, I think they were consciously aware about it,” said Khairy.
Jacel is the daughter of the self-proclaimed Sultan of Sulu, Jamalul Kiram III.
He ordered 200 members of his “Royal Sulu Army” to invade Lahad Datu in February 2013 to stake his claim over Sabah.
