GEORGE TOWN: A feasibility study to reclaim land off Permatang Damar Laut in Bayan Lepas is being undertaken by a company.
State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said a feasibility study had to be conducted before reclamation was allowed.
“The reclamation project has not been approved.
“We will study the report to see whether (reclamation) is suitable.
“We will discuss and elaborate on it in length in the state assembly, which will resume on Monday,” he said yesterday.
The Consumers Association of Penang recently urged the state to explain why a company was carrying out measurement works, demarcation and exploration of the seabed in Permatang Damar Laut.
CAP president S.M. Mohamed Idris said reclamation should not be allowed for the sake of the environment and the livelihood of the 300 fishermen in the area.
In a separate development, Chow, who is also the Penang DAP chairman, said candidates for the Penang DAP election on Nov 29 would be announced next week.
