KUALA LUMPUR: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) will support the use of the latest taxi technology and innovations that would favour consumers.
It said it will propose to amend the Land Public Transport Act 2010 to include the new innovations to improve the service and welfare of taxi drivers.
SPAD said these involved a thorough review of the regulatory aspects and to identify the best business model for local taxi industry. It did not state when the proposal would be made.
The proposal follows the recommendations made by taxi and driver associations in several rounds of meetings held with SPAD.
"SPAD hereby gives the assurance to the taxi industry that we will find solutions at the earliest possible time to address the issues highlighted towards uplifting the public transport industry in Malaysia," the statement said.
The government had previously established programmes such as the 1Malaysia People's Taxi (TR1Ma) in 2012 and 1Malaysia Taxi (TEKS1M) in 2013, to address the problems of the local taxi industry
