Work of art: Volchkova posing with her Indian Boatman mural just off Stewart Lane in George Town.

GEORGE TOWN: Russian artist Julia Volchkova has done several large murals in Penang and is now looking for a local Indian woman to be the face of her latest artwork.

She would like one aged between 16 and 30 and dressed in a traditional saree, to pose for the mural to be painted on a building along Aceh Street in the core heritage zone.

The 28-year-old said many people have contacted her since she posted the request on her Facebook page on Sunday.

“The people in Penang are very friendly.

“Many beautiful girls, whom I have met and got acquainted with on the streets, were also willing to be my subject,” she said yesterday.

While she is fascinated by the island’s cultural diversity, she has a particular affinity for Indian culture which has often been featured in her works.

“Since my childhood days, my family would often watch Bollywood movies.

“They are full of dancing and colourful costumes, and I’m always keen to learn more.”

Though the artist was not aware of Deepavali next week, she felt the subject of her latest mural made for a nice coincidence.

Volchkova has been involved with street art over the past decade.

Those interested, may go to her Facebook page at www.facebook.com/volchkova.art, or Instagram at Volchkovaart.
