Haze: Isolated rain in Penang brings slight relief

Penang ferry services making it way to Pengkalan Feri Terminal Sultan Abdul Halim through a thick haze in Butterworth, Penang.

GEORGE TOWN: Isolated rain in several areas in the state Monday brought slight relief to Penangites with the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings showing a slight improvement.

The Department of Environment (DOE) online portal showed that the API reading at its monitoring station in Prai had improved from 152 at 6am to 147 at 8am.

The monitoring station in Seberang Jaya 2 also recorded an improvement from 173 (6am) to 167 at 8am.

Meanwhile, the monitoring station in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) recorded an API of 178 at 6am before it went down to 172 at 8am.

An API reading of between 0 and 50 is considered good, 51 to 100 (moderate), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy), and 301 and above (hazardous).
