PETALING JAYA: Schools nationwide will remain open as normal Thursday, says the Education Ministry, debunking a fake press release saying classes in certain states would be suspended due to the haze.

The Education Ministry made a Facebook post on Wednesday, saying the fake press release had been spread by irresponsible people on messaging app WhatsApp.

The fake press release claimed that schools in Selangor, Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan and Sri Aman, Kuching, Samarahan and Sri Aman in Sarawak would be closed on Thursday.

"Make sure you get the legitimate and official press release from the Education Ministry portal (www.moe.gov.my) and the Education Ministry's official Facebook and Twitter account," it said in the post.

On Monday, schools in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negri Sembilan and several parts of Sarawak were closed when the air pollutant index (API) had "Unhealthy" readings.

An API reading of between 0 and 50 is considered good, 51 to 100 (moderate), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy), and 301 and above (hazardous).
