KOTA KINABALU: A series of performances showcasing the diverse cultures of the ethnic groups will be among the highlights of the Malaysia Day celebrations at Padang Merdeka today.

Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin will mark the occasion by cutting a Malaysia Day cake with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak addressing the crowd.

“We hope to make it a memorable celebration for the nation,” said Malaysia Day organising chairman Datuk Masidi Manjun, who is the state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister.

He said the organising committee hoped to see both the young and the elderly turning up in big numbers to celebrate the achievements of the country, besides keeping with the National Day theme Sehati Sejiwa (One Heart One Soul).

The celebrations will also see the mountain guides involved in the rescue work during the June 5 Mount Kinabalu earthquake among the ordinary Malaysians honoured, as well as 16 people born on Sept 16 but in different years.
