Penang Starwalk a big success

GEORGE TOWN: Thousands turned up for the Penang Starwalk 2015, with some of them in attire featuring the Penang state flag and Jalur Gemilang.

More than 20,000 people lined up the streets here for a 7km non-competition walk. They were flagged off at the Penang Times Square by Star Media Group Bhd executive director Tan Sri Kamal Hashim at 7am yesterday.

He was accompanied by Penang Amateur Athletics Association (PAAA) president Datuk Syed Mohd Aidid Syed Murtaza, Starwalk Penang 2015 chairman David Yeoh, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Ali Tabassi, Ivory Properties Group Bhd executive director Datuk Ooi Chin Loo and PAAA secretary V. Govindasamy.

Among those who captured the spotlight was seasoned Starwalk participant Zambuka Mat Kamis, 38.

The hotel housekeeper, his wife Rozita Rahim, 31, son Mohd Akif, five, and daughter Balqis Zulaikha, two, all wore identical custom-made attire imprinted with the Penang state flag and Jalur Gemilang.

“We are in the Merdeka spirit and Malaysia Day is coming up. I have always worn this outfit since I started taking part in Starwalk in 2011.

“Each set of the outfit cost me around RM100. I will have to order new ones when my children grow bigger,” said a jolly Zambuka, who walked with a full-size Jalur Gemilang with Rozita.

St Xavier’s Institution student M. Anbarasan, 16, came in crutches and managed to complete the walk with his friends.

He was knocked down by a car while riding a motorcycle in Bandar Baru Air Itam on Sept 4.

“Starwalk is only once a year and I don’t want to miss this sporting event,” he said.

The participants walked along Jalan Datuk Keramat, Jalan Penang, Jalan Burma, Jalan Transfer, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Lebuh Farquhar, Lebuh Light, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Lebuh Carnarvon, Jalan Magazine, Jalan Gurdwara and Jalan Kampung Jawa Baru before ending back at Penang Times Square.

There were refreshments and games at booths set up by sponsors.

A Starwalk Variety Show was held at the main stage of the mall’s Chin Ho Plaza.

Penang Starwalk 2015 also featured a segment where participants from corporate companies and charities took part in the “Walk With Us” 1km charity walk.

Staff of the charity arm of Ivory Properties Group Bhd, IvoryCares, joined in the charity walk and gave goodie bags and breakfast to the charity walk participants.

Penang Starwalk 2015 was jointly organised by Star Media Group Bhd (formerly known as Star Publications (M) Bhd) and PAAA.

YES was the Platinum sponsor while the four Silver sponsors were E&O, Pallas, 100Plus and Magnum.

The lucky draw grand prize – a three-day, two-night stay at the Pangkor Laut Resort and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, sponsored by YES – was won by factory worker Linda Lim, 60.
