BUKIT MERTAJAM: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (pic) has congratulated the People’s Action Party (PAP) for returning to power in Singapore with a larger majority.
He said the results showed that Singaporeans voted for good governance and clean leadership, traits that the republic is famous for.
“In such times, especially when we are facing economic uncertainties, it is important to have a clean leadership and good governance to face and overcome the economic challenges.
“With the drop in stock market because of the weakening in the Chinese economy, the world economy will face many challenges. What more when we have internal problems? It will only make the economic crisis worst,” he told a press conference at the Ng Yam Huat Hall after presenting RM1,000 cheques to 582 students.
Before the ceremony began, Lim also called for a minute of silence to mourn those who perished in the crane collapse tragedy in Mecca.
PAP secured a strong mandate with a popular vote of 69.9%, an almost 10% increase from 60.1% in the 2011 general election.
The party won 83 out of 89 seats in the 29 constituencies.
