PETALING JAYA: Several Opposition leaders implicated in an alleged plot to smear Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) via tampered information to the Sarawak Report have dismissed the allegation.
This follows a police report lodged by Pertubuhan Minda & Sosial Prihatin president Ramesh Rao Krishnan Naidu and a video confession by former Sarawak Tribune editor Lester Melanyi.
PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar described the claims made against her father Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as “ridiculous”.
“How could he (Anwar) have forged the documents when he’s been in prison since February?” the Lembah Pantai MP asked when contacted yesterday.
PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli described the police report as an evil conspiracy and denied having met Lester, named in the report as being a former editor of Sarawak Report.
“I have never met or communicated with Lester Melanyi. The first time I learned of his existence was when (Barisan Nasional strategic communications director) Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan revealed the report,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Rafizi, who is the Pandan MP, said he had also never given instructions to Sarawak Report or provided it with material to publish, adding that he had never communicated with Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown regarding 1MDB.
“Throughout my career, I only cooperated with Sarawak Report on one case, a logging scandal in Sabah,” he said.
DAP national publicity chief Tony Pua said it would be a “waste of time” if it could not be proven that the person behind the allegations was indeed linked with Sarawak Report.
Anwar, Rafizi and Pua were among those named in the report lodged by Ramesh in Petaling Jaya on Wednesday morning.
In the report, Ramesh claimed Lester had admitted that information published in the Sarawak Report online news portal by Rewcastle-Brown was done under the orders of Pua, Rafizi, PKR’s Sarawak Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How and DAP’s Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen.
Ramesh also alleged that Lester met Anwar in London to discuss ways to topple Najib.
