KUALA LUMPUR: The Animal Welfare Bill 2015 was passed by the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday, paving the way for harsher punishments for animal abusers.
If convicted, abusers can face a fine between RM20,000 and RM100,000 and a jail sentence of not more than three years.
The Bill will now have to be passed by the Dewan Negara and be given the royal assent before it can be gazetted as a law.
Agriculture and Agro-Based Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic) said the aim of the Bill was to enable deterrent sentences to be handed down to offenders.
"This law is to send a message to people not to abuse animals but there are some offences that can be given compounds like failure to display licences," he said.
