KUALA LUMPUR: The Secretariat of the Advancement of Malaysia Entrepreneurs (SAME) is already bearing fruit despite being less than a year old.

In just eight months, the secretariat has helped 41 businesses obtain loans of RM3.4mil and 175 in getting grants amounting to RM1.34 mil.

"We have not been goyang kaki (sitting idle)," SAME founder Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said at SAME's official launch of the RM50mil SME loan scheme for Chinese businesses.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who was present, announced the loan during Budget 2015 last year.

"By having this new scheme, maybe we can reduce the role of Ah Longs (illegal moneylenders)," said Najib.

He announced that the Finance Ministry would disburse the RM50mil to Kojadi, MCA's investment and educatiom arm, in two weeks' time.

Malaysian Chinese between 21 and 60 are eligible to apply for loans between RM50,000 and RM250,000 at a flat rate of 4% per annum.
