KUALA LUMPUR: Search is continuing for 40 climbers missing at Mount Kinabalu after an earthquake hit Sabah on Friday.
Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said all activities, such as recreation and hiking, at the mountain have been halted.
“We are trying to locate 40 people believed to be trapped on the mountain,” he told reporters.
Khalid said police and military aircraft could not access the area due to severe weather conditions.
"We have received word that 29 people have made it down the mountain, and three of them were injured.
“Search and rescue personnel are making their way up the mountain in search of the missing 40 people,” he said.
An earthquake with a 5.9 magnitude hit Ranau, Tuaran and Kota Belud at 7.15am.
“Ranau was hit hardest with at least 10 buildings suffering cracks.
“The buildings include a hospital, school, police station, flats and some houses,” Khalid said.
He said in Tuaran and Kota Belud, only police buildings suffered cracks as they were the tallest structures in the districts.
