SHAH ALAM: The pro-ulama group, led by two sons of PAS leaders, made a clean sweep of the Youth wing in the movement’s elections.
Nik Mohd Abduh Nik Aziz and his running mate Khalil Abdul Hadi defeated incumbents Suhaizan Kayat and his deputy Raja Ahmad Raja Iskandar Yaacob.
Nik Mohd Abduh, son of revered spiritual leader, the late Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, received 429 votes, defeating Suhaizan, who got 262 votes.
Khalil, son of PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, got 435 votes, while Raja Ahmad managed 257 votes.
Other casualties included Youth vice-president Nor Azman Mohamad, who was defeated by Khairil Nizam Khirudin.
The results were unsurprising given the fervent calls from the grassroots for a stronger stand on hudud and the party’s role in Pakatan Rakyat.
A hint of the clean sweep came when Suhaizan’s address to the delegates on Tuesday night was met with jeers.
Nik Mohd Abduh told reporters that he would work to unite the fractious youth wing and go on a national tour to close ranks.
He also promised to stay committed to Pakatan Rakyat despite DAP’s attacks against PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
“There is no basis for a break-up. I hope we will be able to resolve it amicably,” he added.
Asked what action he would take to counter the DAP attacks, he said he would use the “soft approach” to handle the political differences between the two parties.
Meanwhile, all Dewan Ulama incumbents won their posts uncontested for the 2015-2017 term.
Datuk Dr Mahfodz Mohamed is now the Dewan Ulama chief after filling in the position that was left vacant by Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob.
His deputy is Datuk Muhammad Nik Salleh, who was the wing’s secretary. Datuk Dr Johari Mat is the vice-chief of Dewan Ulama.
