PETALING JAYA: After years of hearing complaints about burglaries in his neighbourhood and not being able to do anything about it, a policeman finally caught one thief red-handed – just across the road from his house.

Kpl Che Zamila Che, 38, was having a smoke outside his home in Jalan SS5D/2 Kelana Jaya on Friday when he saw a burly man on a motorcycle riding past the houses. The man was looking into the houses as he slowly rode up and down the road before stopping in front of his neighbour’s house at about 3.30pm.

Kpl Che Zamila, who was watching from behind a car, at first thought that he could be his neighbour’s friend.

But when the man carried a bag towards the iron grille door, he pulled out his gun.

“I ran into the house, pointed the gun to his back and shouted ‘Baring!’ (lie down).”

He than pinned the man to the ground and handcuffed him.

Inside the bag were screwdrivers, a bunch of keys and a metal rod.

“There have been a lot of break-ins and robberies here.

“My neighbours always say they call the police but they arrive too late. Even when I called for help, they only came about 30 minutes later. As a policeman, I get upset when I hear this happening to my neighbours. I work in Shah Alam so I’m not here most of the time,” he said.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Azmi Abu Kassim said the suspect was just released from prison for committing a robbery.

He faces up to two years jail for the latest attempted crime.
