SANDAKAN: There is a sharp drop in customers at popular seafood restaurants in this east coast town following Thursday’s kidnapping of two Malaysians from Ocean King Seafood Restaurant.

Ocean King itself remained closed while a check on restaurants along the coastline between Jalan Leila and Jalan Bokora saw only a handful of customers, despite the noticeable presence of police personnel at some eateries.

“For a weekend, there is very little turnout. I think the people are worried, and it will take time for the crowd to return,” said one operator, who declined to be named.

Two bak kut teh eateries and a seafood restaurant in Bandar Nam Tung, also located next to the sea, closed an hour earlier due to poor business.

Bandar Nam Tung is a small township in Tanah Merah, located about two kilometres from Ocean King.
