PASIR PUTEH: The remains of Malaysian student, Nor Atikah Alias, who died in a hostel fire in Russia on April 22 were buried at the Kampung Rakit Muslim Cemetery in Jeram Linang here.
Nor Atikah was buried at 10.45am next to the grave of her grandmother, Esah Ali.
The final rites were performed at the home of her uncle, Mat Yaacob Mat Jusoh, next to the cemetery.
Nor Atikah's remains arrived at the KL International Airport (KLIA) at 9.45pm Saturday from Moscow, Russia, and reached her uncle's home at 8.30am.
Her remains were accompanied by her father Alias Yaacob, her mother Najihah Mat Jusoh as well as her fiance Wan Mohd Ikwan Wan Sayuti.
Nor Atikah, 25, a final-year medical student at the Russian National Research Medical University in Moscow died at the Intensive Care Unit of the Sklifosovskogo Hospital from 30 per cent burns on the face, hands and feet.
All the costs of bringing home her remains were borne by the Terengganu government as her studies were sponsored by the Terengganu Foundation.
Also present at her burial were Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, Pasir Puteh Member of Parliament Dr Nik Mazian Nik Mohamad, Terengganu State Education, Science, Technology and Special Functions Committee chairman Ghazali Taib, and Kelantan police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim.
Najihah told reporters that she managed to meet and talk to Nor Atikah before she died three days later at the hospital.
"During the meeting, Nor Atikah talked a lot about heaven. She was a good daughter and I accept her death," she said.
Nor Atikah was the second of five siblings. Her father was a traffic police sergeant in the Pasir Mas District Police Headquarters.
Mat Yaacob said the two cattle which had been bought for Nor Atikah's wedding in August would now be used for special prayer sessions for her.
He said she was very close to his family and would visit them each time she returned home on vacation. - Bernama
