Rompin by-election: BN and PAS candidates among first to cast votes

ROMPIN: Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Hasan Arifin and PAS candidate Nazri Ahmad were among those who voted early in the Rompin parliamentary by-election on Tuesday.

Hasan, 62, and his wife Datin Rizidah Karim, 57, cast their votes at Sekolah Kebangsaan Leban Chondong at 8.55am.

Nazri, 40, cast his ballot at the Sekolah Agama Rakyat LKTP  Keratong 5, Felda at 8am.

A total of 38 polling centres and 115 channels were opened from 8am to enable 52,744 voters to cast their ballots.

On Thursday, 464 individuals or 85.1% out of the total 545 voters had cast their ballots in early voting at four polling centres in the parliamentary constituency.

Rompin experienced fine weather on Tuesday morning but the Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms in the afternoon.

As Tuesday is a public holiday in Pahang, it is anticipated that more voters will turn out to cast their ballots in this by-election.

The Rompin by-election witnesses a straight fight between Hasan and Nazri to fill the vacancy following the death of its incumbent Tan Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis.

Jamaluddin, who was also Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (PR1MA) chairman, died in a helicopter crash in Semenyih on April 4.

In the 13th general election, Jamaluddin retained the seat which he held for almost six terms by defeating former PAS Muslimat chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh with a 15,114 majority-vote. – Bernama
