GEORGE TOWN: A meeting to discuss the terms of reference (ToR) on transgenders was postponed due to lack of quorum.

State assemblyman for Tanjung Bungah Teh Yee Cheu, who was tasked with drawing up a framework during the last state assembly sitting in November, said only Pulau Tikus assemblyman Yap Soo Huey and representatives of Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari and Padang Lalang assemblyman Chong Eng were present.

Teh said that during the last state assembly sitting, an informal discussion with interested assemblymen was held and concluded with the agreement that he be elected chairman of the bipartisan committee and be tasked to follow up on the matter by calling a meeting and preparing the ToR for the committee.

Yap said that as the transgender issue is a sensitive one, the state government could look into taking “baby steps” rather than taking an aggressive stand solving the issues faced by the community.

Teh said he would prepare a paper to be submitted at the next state assembly sitting in May to discuss the ToR.
