MERSING: Two friends were crushed to death by a falling tree while camping at Hutan Taman Bahtera in Jemaluang near here.

Mersing OCPD Deputy Supt S.M Kumar said Rizal Ismail, 33, and Hanafi Abd Rahman, 42, were sleeping when the dead tree fell on their tent around 4.30am on Sunday.

The duo were on a fishing trip near a jungle over 4km from Taman Bahtera at about 4.30pm on Saturday and decided to camp for the night.

“Initial investigations showed that the four odd-job workers were sleeping in a tent erected beside a tree in the jungle.

“On Sunday morning, the tree fell on the tent and crushed the two victims while two others escaped unhurt,” DSP Kumar said.

He added that the two survivors sought help from nearby residents and took Rizal and Hanafi to the Jemaluang clinic where they were pronounced dead upon arrival.
