PETALING JAYA: Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar (pic) has been arrested under the Sedition Act for allegedly making a seditious remark in a speech in Parliament last Tuesday.

The PKR vice-president was detained at the Dang Wangi police station on Monday at 3.30pm, soon after appearing at the station to give her statement on the March 7 “Kita Lawan” rally.

"ASP Muniandy informed me that I have been detained on orders from the D5 deputy director general in Bukit Aman," she tweeted at 3.25pm.

“The police haven't told us yet which parts of the speech are seditious or whether the entire speech is seditious,”  PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said when contacted.

According to him, Nurul has been held under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.

Last Tuesday, Izzah read out Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s speech in Parliament, where she spoke out against her father’s imprisonment for sodomy and allegedly attacked the judiciary.

PKR’s Padang Serai MP N. Surendran said in a statement earlier that the sedition investigation initiated against the Lembah Pantai MP was “unconstitutional” as it interfered with the rights and privileges of Parliament.

“Article 63(2) of the Federal Constitution confers immunity from any proceedings in court for anything said by an MP in the Dewan Rakyat,” he said.
