Cop on duty killed in head-on collision in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: A second head-on collision in Penang southwest district in two days claimed the life of a policeman on duty on Friday.

L/Kpl B. Sukumaran, who was on his way to Sungai Ara, died when his motorcycle collided with a van that was travelling in the opposite direction in Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in Bayan Lepas at about 6.30am.

Sukumaran sustained injuries to his head and body while the van driver suffered minor injuries.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Lai Fah Hin said Sukumaran was on a special duty during the accident. 

He added that the van driver will be detained soon to facilitate in investigations.

Relatives claimed Sukumaran's body from the Balik Pulau mortuary at around 3.15pm. His remains would be taken to Alor Gajah in Malacca for funeral rites.

On Thursday, 34-year-old Khairul Syakirin Jamaludin was killed when the car he was driving collided head on with another car in Jalan Tun Sardon in Balik Pulau. His mother and son suffered injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
