PUTRAJAYA: MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel has appointed Raub division chairman K. Tamil Selvam as Pahang MIC liaison chief, replacing Senator Datuk R. Goonasegaran.
The appointment letter was issued on Wednesday. Gunasegaran, who was appointed as Pahang MIC chief in 2013, was informed of his removal from the post via a letter on the same day.
On Monday, Palanivel announced the list of the interim Central Working Committee (CWC) following the Home Ministry’s order for the party to hold fresh elections.
He said the Registrar of Societies (RoS) had directed CWC members elected in 2009 to form an interim committee for the purpose of holding re-elections.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said that the party should hold new elections for all elected posts between April and July to avoid deregistration.
The decision was made by the RoS to ensure that the dispute over the election of MIC’s office-bearers could be resolved.
Dr Ahmad Zahid said the failure of MIC to hold re-elections could result in the party’s deregistration under Section 13 of the Societies Act 1966.
MIC leaders, following a meeting with Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Feb 4, agreed to hold fresh elections as a solution to the crisis in the party.
The crisis had erupted over differences of opinion after the RoS nullified the elections for the three posts of vice-president and 23 CWC posts at the party’s general assembly held in Malacca in November 2013 following complaints of irregularities. In a letter dated Dec 5, 2014, the RoS ordered MIC to hold fresh elections for these posts within 90 days. – Bernama
