KUALA LUMPUR: The bilateral relationship between Malaysia and China will be taken to a higher level with the maiden arrival of a Chinese ship at Kuantan port this Friday, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
Liow also said efforts were being made to make this deep water harbour in Pahang an international port.
“A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Kuantan and Qinzhou ports to connect China with the Western world by sea while paving the way for greater bilateral trade between the two countries.
“With the success of the Kuantan Qinzhou Industrial Park, we hope to turn the port into the next international port,” Liow said after presenting the World Chinese Economic Forum’s (WCEF) Lifetime Achievement Awards to two Malaysians at a special conferment ceremony here yesterday.
Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, who is Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman’s Council chairman, received the WCEF Lifetime Achievement Award for Contributions to the Government and Education while CIMB Group chairman Datuk Seri Nazir Razak was given the WCEF Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership in Banking and Financial Services.
The duo were among 14 leaders from various countries to be selected for the award.
Liow congratulated the recipients, saying their contribution to their respective fields had not only highlighted the purpose of WCEF, but also helped to raise Malaysia’s profile.
At the 6th WCEF in Chongqing, China, last December, Star Publications (M) Bhd’s group CEO and managing director Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai was given the WCEF Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership in Media Industry.
Organised by the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute, WCEF aims to promote closer links between China and South-East Asia, as well as between China and the West by fostering business partnerships, economic cooperation and academic collaboration.
Established in Kuala Lumpur in 2009, WCEF also aims to create greater understanding of the rise of China and its impact on regional peace, stability and prosperity.
