PETALING JAYA: Hours before a verdict on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's final Sodomy II appeal is delivered, a fake statement is circulating calling on PAS members not to take part in any protest to support the Opposition leader.
The statement on a PAS letterhead and signed by its president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang gave an "ultimatum" to party members not to protest "something that is not a must (ma’aruf)."
Hadi's political secretary Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar responded swiftly to the statement saying "the statement purpotedly issued on the name of the PAS president (regarding showing solidarity in the case of Anwar) is fake, not at all true."
In the fake statement, Hadi said "it was merely the personal view of a handful of PAS leaders, not the official stance of the party.
“PAS has never called on or invited any of its members to take part in the said demonstration that we view as something that is not a must (ma’aruf).
“PAS is confident and believes the justice system in sentencing criminals and the action in participating the demonstration is not the party’s official stance,” it said.
