PETALING JAYA: He is a lance corporal with no prior disciplinary issues, entrusted to patrol our streets and prevent crime. But now he is suspected of having raped, blackmailed and extorted a teenage girl.

Colleagues of the 30-year-old policeman arrested him and an accomplice, a 29-year-old auxiliary police officer, after the 19-year-old college student lodged a report against the duo on Saturday,

They were remanded on Sunday and have been interdicted (suspended with pay) from their duties according to Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (Jabatan Integriti dan Pematuhan Standard), or JIPS director Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Zubaidah Md Ismail.

“There will be two simultaneous investigations, a criminal and an internal disciplinary investigation. If they are charged, they will be suspended automatically,” she said when contacted yesterday.

A police source leaked to the press that the two officers were on “crime prevention” patrol in Kota Damansara when they spotted the victim having sex with her boyfriend in their car on Jan 26.

The policeman purportedly asked the student for a RM2,000 bribe to be let off. Later that day, he picked her up from her hostel and drove her to a mall here where he forced her to perform oral sex on him in his car.

The officer then purportedly raped the woman in the mall toilet and made her withdraw RM500 for him from her account. He then allegedly threatened to arrest the teen if she did not comply.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Azmi Abu Kassim confirmed the arrests but refused to say anything to reporters until they named their police source.

MyWatch chairman R. Sri Sanjeevan described the officer’s act as “barbaric” and called on JIPS to take the reigns of the investigation from the district police, to avoid any conflicts of interest.

“The abuse of power is totally unacceptable. Bukit Aman must investigate this openly,” he said.
