Former Queen laid to rest at royal mausoleum

KUALA TERENGGANU: The body of Tengku Ampuan Intan Zaharah Almarhum Tengku Seri Setia Raja Tengku Hitam Omar has been laid to rest at the state royal mausoleum at Masjid Abidin here.

She was buried at 4.15pm yesterday, next to the grave of her husband, Almarhum Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, who was the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Tengku Ampuan Intan Zaharah died at the age of 87 in Kuala Lumpur at 3.26pm on Saturday.

Among those who attended the funeral were members and relatives of the Terengganu royal family, including Tengku Besar Terengganu, Sharifah Nong Asegaff, Tunku Ampuan Besar Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Aishah Rohani Almarhum Tengku Besar Mahmud, and Tengku Sri Temenggung Raja Tengku Baharuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Mahmud.

Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman, State Speaker Datuk Zubir Embong, State Secretary Datuk Osman Muda and other state officials were also present to pay their last respects.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is abroad, conveyed his condolences through his Facebook and Twitter accounts posting yesterday.

Tengku Ampuan Intan Zaharah’s body was flown to Terengganu on a Royal Malaysian Air Force aircraft and arrived at the Sultan Mahmud Airport at 10.15am before it was brought to Istana Maziah, where scores of dignitaries and people came to pay their last respects.

Tengku Ampuan Intan Zaharah married Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah on April 3, 1944, and was crowned Tengku Ampuan Terengganu on June 6, 1949, when her husband was installed as the 15th Sultan of Terengganu.

She was Raja Permaisuri Agong from 1965 and 1970 when her husband was installed as the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Terengganu will observe a 40-day mourning period, during which the state flag will be flown at half-mast until March 4.
