KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak held meetings with several Umno division heads at Umno headquarters Menara Dato Onn here on Friday.

It is understood the meetings were to discuss preparations at the grassroots level for the next general election.

The meetings which started at 9am lasted about three hours, with Najib, who is also Umno president, meeting the division heads individually.

Bukit Gantang Umno head Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, who was seen attending one of the meetings, said such meetings were normal when a general election nears but Umno headquarters was acting more agressively this time around by calling for earlier preparations.

"The president wanted to hear and see for himself what we have done. Besides this, we also discussed problems we are facing at the grassroot, middle and upper levels besides the delivery system which needs to be improved further," he told reporters afterwards.

It is also understood that the Umno president and Deputy Prime Minister and Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will be taking turns to meet Umno division leaders at Umno headquarters after this.

Syed Abu Hussin also described the meeting, in which Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor was also present, as very good to increase motivation of the party machinery.

"It also shows the top leadership is very concerned about developments at the grassroot level," he said.

Tengku Adnan, when approached by reporters afterwards, declined to comment on the meetings. - Bernama
