THE recent purchase of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York, for a purported US$2bil (RM6.9bil) by a group from mainland China brings into mind a similar high profile purchase in 1989 of the Rockefeller Centre in New York for slightly under US$1bil (RM3.4bil) by Mitsubishi Real Estate, a Japanese company.
