KUALA LUMPUR: Mastering Chinese, English together with Bahasa Malaysia will ensure Malaysians never lose out in the international arena, says MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.
“The value of Han characters (letters used in writing Chinese) and the Chinese language is increasing as we see China’s economy slowly surpassing that of the United States,” said Dr Wee during the 38rd graduation ceremony of SJK (C) Kuen Cheng 2.
Malaysians of all races are increasingly aware of the importance of the Chinese language.
To illustrate this point, Dr Wee pointed out that 15% of the students in Chinese vernacular schools were of other races.
He added that Malaysians should be grateful as most had the opportunity to learn three languages.
“Having a firm grasp on three languages will aid you in facing challenges in a new era,” he advised the graduating pupils.
According to Dr Wee, SJK (C) Kuen Cheng 2 is one of 11 Chinese vernacular schools recognised as a high performance school.
To support the school’s cause, Dr Wee donated RM10,000 to SJK (C) Kuen Cheng 2 and promised to help the school obtain funds from the Education Ministry.
Present at the event was the school’s PTA president, Chai Being Hwa.
Chai urged pupils to learn how to be independent.
He also expressed his gratitude to current political leaders such as Dr Wee for their persistence in preserving mother-tongue education
“You must know how to give back to society so that the efforts of your parents and teachers to provide you with the best education will not be in vain,” advised Chai.
