KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said there was nothing stopping a woman from becoming Prime Minister of Malaysia.
He said the Federal Constitution does not bar women from holding the position.
However, in a democratic country, the majority support counts.
“If a woman can win majority support, I am sure the party will elect her as the president and the president can then become the Prime Minister,” he said during a question and answer session after delivering a keynote address on Women Leading the Future during the closing ceremony of second day Women Extraordinaire Forum 2014 Wednesday.
He had earlier said that more women were likely to take on more leadership roles in future in view of more of them entering universities, currently at the ratio of 70% women and 30% men.
