KUALA LUMPUR: Seven areas are facing an unscheduled water disruption due to pollutants in the Sungai Selangor water treatment plants, said water concessionaire Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas), Sunday.

They are Gombak, Klang-Shah Alam, Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor, according to its corporate communications and public affairs general manager Priscilla Alfred Dharan.

"Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) is investigating the source of contamination," she said in a statement.

She added that the four water treatment plants (phase one, two, three and Rantau Panjang) temporarily ceased operations around 8pm, Saturday, following hydraulic fluid contamination in the river.

They resumed operations at 8am, Sunday.

She said that the four treatment plants, which supply about 60% of the Klang Valley's treated water, reduced output by some 1,350 million litres.

Syabas expects the water supply in most affected areas to recover fully by 8am, Monday.

Recovery in areas which are on the higher end of the distribution system will occur gradually over the next three days.

To ease any difficulties, water tankers will be on the move to distribute emergency water supplies.

However, as the emergency water supply is limited, priority will be given to users in critical need, such as hospitals and dialysis centres.

The affected areas include:
