ALOR SETAR: Kedah MCA Youth lodged police reports over comments to abolish Chinese vernacular schools.
The reports were against Petaling Jaya Utara Umno deputy youth chief Mohamad Azli Mohamed Saad who suggested that the party's upcoming general assembly discuss the abolishment of the schools.
Mohamad Azli reportedly said people had come to the conclusion that Chinese schools were being used by the Opposition to spread racial and anti-government sentiments
Youth chief Tan Chee Hiong, who led a group of MCA leaders and members in making three reports at the Kota Setar police headquarters, said Mohamad Azli's remarks were uncalled for and went against the spirit of Barisan National.
"The MCA Youth movement will continue to uphold the Federal Constitution in issues related to Malay special privileges, Chinese primary schools and Tamil primary schools in the country,” Tan said.
He said statistics showed that some 14% of the 600,000 pupils in primary Chinese schools were non-Chinese.
“This proves that the Chinese primary schools were accepted by the people of Malaysia.
“Mandarin is one of the widely spoken languages in Asia and internationally.
“Even our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib foresee the importance of the language and sent his son to Beijing to learn Mandarin,” he said.
