KUALA LUMPUR: “Hot chocolate” looks great on you!
Vibrant shades of eyeshadow and lipsticks made of cocoa are going to hit the market soon.
These natural makeup products, which also include foundation and compact powder, are produced from cocoa powder and added with a tinge of pigment extracted from plants.
The Malaysian Cocoa Board (LKM) has been researching on the various uses of cocoa plant over the years and successfully producing numerous beauty products from the locally-grown fruit.
At the Malaysia Cocoa and Chocolate Day 2014 here yesterday, LKM assistant research officer Sarini Hasyim, 34, explained that shoppers would have to wait a little while more to buy the products.
“We have had these products for years but an investor has only recently come forward to market them,” said Sarini.
Asked about the pricing of these products, she said it could be slightly higher as they were made from plants but they would not be a high-end product.
Cocoa butter might not be a new product on the market but this naturally-extracted fruit oil is used as a wax for lipsticks and lipgloss.
“If some methyl salicylate is added to the cocoa butter, it becomes an ointment to treat insect bites and headache,” she said.
While most of the beauty products are made from cocoa butter and powder, she said cocoa husk could be used as a body scrub component.
Cocoa tannin, a compound extracted from cocoa pods contains antibacterial and antioxidant properties and is used to make shower gel, toothpaste and oral rinse.
