YONG PENG: Wanita MCA has always been in the forefront, defending the Federal Constitution and checking any amendments to it, says Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA deputy president said there were those who wanted to amend the Constitution, which would bring a negative impact to the nation and its people.

Dr Wee said PAS’ headstrong move in insisting to implement its brand of hudud law in the country was against the social contract and Constitution.

“Our Wanita wing has been quite active in organising campaigns and seminars to inform the people about the implications of PAS’ hudud implemented here.

“PAS has never changed its intention and its Pakatan Rakyat ally, DAP, should come forward and state its stand on the issue at hand,” he said when met after opening the state Wanita convention here yesterday.

He pointed out that under the Constitution, agreed by Barisan Nasional leaders, Islam is the official religion of this country but those of other religions are allowed to practise their faith freely.

Dr Wee said that such an understanding between the rakyat had helped bring vast development to Malaysia.

He also urged the Wanita wing to groom its members to become future leaders to serve the community.

“We have to start now as the party needs leaders, especially from the Wanita wing, to become candidates for the general election.

“Johor MCA Wanita has always been ahead in this matter as the party has about 10 community leaders and 24 council members in the state alone,” he said.
