TUMPAT: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has thrown his weight behind Barisan National’s Mat Razi Mat Ail, promising the Pengkalan Kubor by-election candidate his unwavering support and assistance.

“Today, I was able to meet his (Mat Razi’s) family and have now gotten to know him very well. If Mat Razi is given the opportunity and trust to serve the people here, I will personally help him in fulfilling his duties,” said Hishammuddin at a press conference at Kampung Simpang here after Friday prayers.

Also present at the mosque was Barisan candidate Mat Razi.

“I feel very relieved. I was very close to the late Datuk Noor Zahidi and now, I have gotten to know our candidate, Ustaz Mat Razi. Seeing the good principles upheld by Mat Razi, I will not hesitate in offering him my assistance,” said Hishammuddin, who explained that the response he received from the people on the ground to Mat Razi was very encouraging.

However, Hishammuddin said that it was a hard call on whether Barisan can maintain the state seat.

“From early on, we knew that this would not be an easy road. We have to ensure the momentum continues and hope that the candidate, who is already well known, can get to know more voters. At the end of the day, we will leave it to Allah, as that is the most important,” added Hishammuddin.

The Pengkalan Kubor by-election on Sept 25 is a three-cornered fight between Mat Razi, Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim of PAS and independent Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.

It is being held following the death of Barisan's three-term assemblyman Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar on Aug 20.

Noor Zahidi had retained the seat in the general election held last year with a majority of 1,736 votes, beating Saharun Ibrahim of PKR and Izat Bukhary.
