PUTRAJAYA: Experts from several countries that have successfully implemented goods and services tax (GST) will be sharing their experiences on the matter with local industry players next week.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan said the experts would speak at an international seminar on GST, to be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

“The seminar is part of our ongoing efforts in explaining the benefits of having the GST in the country.

“The experts are from Britain, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Indonesia and Singapore,” he said after launching the Finance Ministry’s Treasury Club Merdeka Dive 2014 programme here yesterday.

He said that some 500 participants comprising captains of industry have been invited.

“These people represent the group that is at the top of the business or trade chain.

“Their full understanding of the GST could ensure that there will not be any issues about traders manipulating GST to hike prices,” he added.

The GST, which will be introduced on April 1 next year, has been set at 6% and will replace the sales and service tax (SST).
