ALOR SETAR: More than 5,000 Jalur Gemilang have been put up around Alor Setar by the Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) for this year’s Merdeka celebration.

Mayor Datuk Mat Noh Ahmad said the flags were hung along major streets and buildings in the city.

“We also encourage private residences to put up the national flags in conjunction with National Day.

“Despite the MH370 and MH17 tragedies, the Merdeka celebration will still be carried out the same way it was in previous years.

“The Merdeka celebration is not just entertainment, it’s to celebrate our day of independence,” he told reporters after distributing mini Jalur Gemilang to motorists passing by the MBAS building in Jalan Kolam Air yesterday.

Some 600 such flags were distributed with the help of MBAS councillors and staff.

Mat Noh said he hoped to instil love for the country among the public and to appreciate the peace enjoyed by all.
