Praise and brickbats over MRT chief's resignation

PETALING JAYA: MRT Corp CEO Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid, who resigned over the fatal construction site accident in Kota Damansara on Monday, received praise and criticism for his decision.

"He did the honourable thing. This is being responsible. Very rare in local environment," said Zaidi Lipu on The Star Online's Facebook page.

Raj Ganesarajah said: "So Japanese. A man of honor."

Similar views were shared by David Tan, who said; "At least he takes responsibility, not many CEOs or country leaders will do that, especially in Malaysia."

Azhar told a press conference earlier that he had always been very strict over safety measures at MRT sites but such incidents had occurred over and over again.

"I have done my best but I have evidently failed and therefore will be handing over my duties," he said of the incident where three Bangladeshi workers were killed when a concrete span at the site collapsed at 8.30pm.

Here are other comments from netizens:

Devaraj P Thangaraju: "Salute him for taking the honourable action."

"Sad..but a great gesture by Datuk Azhar, I think maybe the only Malaysian who resign over an incident..Bravo Datuk," said Cig Yeng L.

Henry Leong praised Azhar for "having the guts to resign" and Mohala Santharamohana said that by resigning, Azhar "has done the right thing."

Apart from the praise, netizens also criticise Azhar's decision, with some like Steven Roban saying his resignation was not the solution to the accident.

"Resigning is not a solution or punishment. Put him in jail for negligence of duty," said Roban.

Eddy Kong added: "Resigning won't let you run away from everything. Face it and deal it and settle it, not just resign."

Cheng Looi Quah said that Azhar "should not resign. Resigning is like running away from the problem .. should stick around and do better on your job."
