Ugly aftermath: Uprooted trees damaged a car in Segamat after an hour-long freak storm wreaked havoc in the district.

KOTA KINABALU: Heavy rains and hailstorms hit several areas nationwide, damaging properties as well as causing floods and blackouts.

A mid-afternoon thunderstorm here in the interior Tambunan district brought with it thumb-sized hailstones.

But no injuries were reported following the incident on Sunday.

The hailstones began falling soon after the storm began at about 3pm, said SM St Martins Tambunan teacher Ryan Gomis Gotil.

Gomis was at the school’s workshop when the rain began.

“When I looked outside, I saw some white stuff on the ground and realised these were hailstones,” he said.

Gomis said a check with other Tambunan folk showed the hail stones had fallen in certain parts of the district such as Sunsuron, Piasau, Gagaroan, Tombotuan and Tampasak where the school was located.

In Segamat, an hour-long freak storm uprooted trees and damaged more than 190 homes in at least eight areas.

The storm, with heavy rainfall and strong winds, started at about 6pm on Saturday.

State Women and Family Affairs Committee chairman Asiah Md Ariff said: “This was a bad storm which caused a lot of damage to the homes. Luckily no one was seriously hurt in the storm.”

Segamat MCA division chief Datuk Lee Hong Tee said the MCA’s Crisis Relief Squad (CRSM) had been deployed soon after the storm to provide assistance to those affected.

In Sungai Siput, a freak storm wrecked at least three residential areas, affecting 108 families.

In Taman Sentosa, the turbulent wind and downpour ripped through the roofs of at least 40 houses, causing severe leakages, floods and a blackout.
