PETALING JAYA: PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has thrown his support behind Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to remain as the Selangor Mentri Besar, making the leadership change issue more intense.

He said that he was in favour of Khalid remaining as the Mentri Besar because he has been doing a good job as a leader.

“That is my stand and I hope all PAS leaders are with me,” he said, adding that the decision was made after considering the views of PAS members.

Hadi, according to Bernama, said the majority of the PAS grassroots agreed that Khalid should remain as Mentri Besar.

However, this would depend on the Sultan of Selangor, he said when met at his house in Rusila, Terengganu, yesterday.

Hadi said Khalid’s track record in helming Selangor and retaining the state in the 13th general election could not be denied, despite problems in Pakatan Rakyat.

He said he could not accept the grounds given by some quarters in wanting Khalid to step down.

“If he is involved in a scandal, breach of trust or misappropriation of government funds, then we can ask for a change, but if there is another reason, it won’t be solved by changing the Mentri Besar.

“Let him complete his term,” he added.

In an immediate response, PKR leader and Seri Andalas assemblyman Dr Xavier Jayakumar said: “As far as PKR is concerned, we have decided that there should be change for the better and it is important for everyone to respect that decision.”

PKR vice-president Tian Chua said they would wait for PAS’ central committee decision after the Hari Raya celebrations.

“We formally conveyed our decision to the Pakatan leadership council, and PAS told us they will get back to us after Hari Raya. We will wait for their verdict,” said the Batu MP.

DAP leaders have steered clear of the crisis, saying they will not comment until the party leadership has a made a decision on the issue.

“I don’t want to comment until the leadership has made a decision. For now, let’s have a good Hari Raya,” said Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.
