KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has called on the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations to despatch humanitarian assistance immediately to the Gaza peninsula.

Denouncing the Israeli air strikes on Gaza, Najib said on the www.1malaysia.com.my blog that Malaysia condemned the attacks by Israeli forces on the territory.

He said the cruelty of the Zionist regime against the Palestinians in Gaza was not only being opposed by Muslims but also people who hold to the principles of humanitarianism.

To date, the media reported at least 81 Palestinians were killed while hundreds more were injured by incessant air strikes by the Israeli regime on Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was reported as saying the regime had mobilised 40,000 troops to launch a ground attack against Gaza.

Najib said Malaysia has not given up hopes on fighting for the rights of the Palestinian people and would give undivided support to all efforts to end the conflict which has gone on for a long time in Gaza.

However, he said, all efforts would not be complete without faith.

"As such, I called on Muslims to carry out our prayers together for the Palestinian people," the Prime Minister said. - Bernama
