PETALING JAYA: The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) has released the raw data obtained from Inmarsat that was used to calculate the flight path of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

The DCA said all 47 pages containing the data communication logs from Inmarsat and relevant explanation on the data provided were made public.

These are available at www.dca.gov.my.

Inmarsat operates a global satellite network that enables mobile and fixed communications services for aviation, maritime, enterprise and government customers.

The British satellite telecommunications company and the DCA have been working together on the release of the data logs and the technical description of their analysis, said the DCA.

“The data logs along with the additional notes for Flight MH370 were prepared by Inmarsat,” the DCA said in a statement.

Several families of passengers aboard MH370 had been calling for the release of the information.

MH370 disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Based on Inmarsat calculations of the satellite data, MH370 was plotted over the southern Indian Ocean – completely opposite to the direction it should have been heading – and is believed lost in that area.

Speculation was rife among some next of kin and several news media that the calculations or the data were flawed, particularly when searches failed to turn up even debris from MH370.

The DCA said the data has been made public in accordance with instructions from Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein in keeping with the Government’s policy of transparency concerning MH370.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said some may not be able to fully understand the raw data, but they could e-mail their queries to mh370@dca.gov.my for assistance.

“Even ministry and DCA staff had to refer to Inmarsat for explanations on some parts of the data,” he said.

He said the DCA continues to work closely with Inmarsat on locating the Boeing 777 aircraft.
