Dog shot in UiTM campus, claim students

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) students are claiming that a dog was shot in the university’s Shah Alam campus on Thursday night.

A student who did not want to be named said she was in her hostel at about 7.20pm when she heard two shots being fired.

When she looked out of her hostel window, she saw a whimpering dog staggering towards a drain.

“When I went out, there were a lot of people surrounding the dog. It fell into a drain,” said the student who did not want to be identified because of possible repercussions of speaking to the media.

She said witnesses had seen two men on a motorcycle, one of whom was armed with a rifle shooting the dog.

They then sped away from the scene of the incident.

“I could not help but cry and should out anak saya (my child). The dog has been there for a long time and it never disturbed anyone. Even when it was in the drain, it was playing with a tennis ball,” said the student who is an animal lover.

She said the dog was not in the drain when she and a few other students came out to check on it at about  11pm.

Another student who also did not want to be identified also heard the shots being fired when she was in class.

“This is so ironic because there was an animal abuse campaign here a few years ago. Now they are shooting dogs on campus,” she said.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) project manager Melinda Joy Gomez said that the Department of Veterinary Services had issued a memo to local councils and other parties prohibiting the shooting of dogs.

“How can men with rifles run around freely in the compound of the university?” she asked.

When contacted, the university authorities said they could not comment about the incident as they were not aware about it.
