KUALA LUMPUR: A Bukit Aman inspector was sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Sessions Court for shooting a Pakistani man in Jalan Masjid India here in 2009.

Judge Rosbiahanin Arifin held that the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt on the prosecution's case against Mohd Soffian Mohd Yusof, 31, who has since been suspended.

Mohd Soffian's father, Mohd Yusof Khir Din, 54, was sentenced to six months for making a false statement to cover his son while lodging a report at the Tun HS Lee police station on the day of the incident.

The father and son were ordered to serve their sentences from today.

The court also dismissed an application for a stay of execution by their lawyer Harpal Singh Gill.

Mohd Sofian was accused of intentionally shooting and seriously injuring Ahmad Muzaffar with a Victor gun in front of City One Plaza, Jalan Masjid India at 12.20 am on March 3 2009.

Mohd Yusof was charged with giving false information about the offence by saying the Pakistani man had attacked his son with a machete.

Deputy public prosecutor Suhaimi Ibrahim presented 17 witnesses while the defence called on six witnesses including both the accused. - Bernama
