KOTA BARU: Umno has proposed the establishment of a national-level technical committee on hudud before PAS tables a bill on the Islamic laws in Parliament.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the committee would comprise experts on hudud law, including authorities from overseas.
"It is better the discussion is represented by experts. Maybe a technical committee can be formed comprising Federal Government representatives from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), Kelantan Islamic Religious Council, religious figures as well as experts at international level from other Islamic countries.
"The committee will look at hudud from all angles and how it could be implemented in Malaysia, especially in Kelantan or whether it could be implemented or otherwise," he told reporters after opening the Education Management Profesionalism: High Prestigious Leadership seminar at the Technology Education Department in Pengkalan Chepa here Sunday.
The Umno deputy president said he had conveyed the proposal to Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, who reacted positively to it.
Muhyiddin said hudud law should be discussed in detail as many still do not understand what it actually meant.
"I think Muslims are still unclear and there is a need for more in-depth and widespread dissemination of information.
"Non-Muslims would also want to know the situation as this is an independent country. Other citizens also have the right to know as they are fearful of its effects," he said. - Bernama
