Chinese cemetery to make way for Rapid project in Johor

PENGERANG: The grave relocation exercise for one of the five Chinese cemeteries was slated to begin at Sungai Kapal Friday to make way for the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid) project.

About 20 policemen have been on standby to guard the area since around 5am and roadblocks have been set up since 7am to prevent residents and other people from entering the area on Friday.

Residents who had left the area were denied re-entry into the road, which leads up to the graveyard.

They were later asked to produce their MyKad to prove that their address was in the area before they could be allowed in again.

It is understood that four graves would be relocated from the Sungai Kapal Chinese cemetery from nine families who agreed to the relocation exercise.

The exercise, which was supposed to begin in March, was postponed to after Qing Ming (Tomb Sweeping Day).
