ALOR GAJAH: The '1 Juta Rakyat Malaysia Menyokong Shabery Cheek' (One million Malaysians support Shabery Cheek) Facebook account is mischievous and has nothing to do with him, said Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He had reported the matter to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate and take appropriate action.

The Kemaman MP said he would also be making a police report and would personally ask Facebook to delete the account.

"I was shocked when my name was used to open the account when in actual fact, I do not know anything about this.

"The account have postings which are unsuitable and made by irresponsible people," he told reporters here.

The Facebook account with the name '1 Juta Rakyat Malaysia Menyokong Shabery Cheek' has made all kinds of postings, which are insulting to race, religion, the monarchy and police force.

The account, which started on May 29 last year, was allegedly managed by its administrator known as 'Amran Pekida', and has 2,328 "likes.'

Ahmad Shabery said using someone else's name to open a Facebook account was quite common. He urged the public not to make any hasty decision on the postings in the account and not to make accusations until it had been investigated.

"Which is why we stress on the need to educate the public to be wise in their assessment of anything they get on the internet," he said.

On the allegation that the MCMC was not firm in curtailing such things, he said at present, Malaysia had more than 14 million Facebook accounts, which was among the highest in any country and these accounts were managed by Facebook itself and not MCMC.

"Because we practise an open system, we cannot stop Facebook, it is not logical that we shut down these accounts or make special registration requirements...these cannot be done and will have a negative effect on us," he said. - Bernama
